The commeraderie inside and out Atelier 17 and Atelier 63 for me, I hope I shared love and warmth and appreciation for it all when there, as I delve into this glorious past and try and reconnect with those Both my wife and I enjoyed there 1978-August 1980
I told Christina Weyl that i am a bit of a herstorian as well as an artist and someone that gladly welcomes all, and learns and brows volumes from my contacts I made then and that continue now.
You have seen some of tge art that was made for me in my small yellow Dessin " J " bervis 536 F5.70 my cost the.
Below is an aerogramme in it from fellow artist Fred Jones from Illinois. i am trying to contact him and get back in touch. that would be very special indeed.I remember him and his kindness and generosity. Most I remember of the Americans that came to work in the Atelier 17 how happy they were to be there and how positive theyvwere to be together and share this amazing experience together. And they were of all ages, too. I have wonderful gifts of etchings from so many. Debbie Kaplan, Clare Smith,Marilyn Donnini, Jennifer Clark, Carol Field, Theresa Wegner, these were some of the women, and I mention them here because Christina Weyl is interested in interviewing the women that studied with Bill Hayter.
Atelier 17 was a community for us all.It was friendly and there was lit5le if any problems amongst us. We all seemed to ake friends, we all seemed to try and be pn our best behavior. some kept to themselves , or maybe it only seemed that way because of the language barrier , as most of us I am sure were learning French to communicate better with one another.
All in all it was a very positive experience, i thrived in it, loved it, encouraged it, and often invited people over. And they came from around the world, some French but just a few, most from outside France and that really kept things interesting : Argentina, Begium, Columbia, Brazil, Peru, Japan, Mexico, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, Ireland, China, India, ... and these are just some of the countries I am able to recollect so many years later.
As I said I collected many things as souvenirs, all of which I will share here at some point or another. it will happen gradually.
What I say to anyone that reads and sees this please reach out and leave a message, tell a story, include any pictures or pieces of art, or other things tgat were impresdionable to you then.
